Bearings are strategic materials for the national economy and key basic components in the equipment manufacturing industry. In 2010, the total output of bearings in the entire industry was 15 billion sets, with sales reaching 126 billion yuan, ranking third in the world.
Although the development scale of China’s bearing industry is huge, most of it is concentrated at the low end. The “Twelfth Five-Year Development Plan for the Mechanical Basic Components, Basic Manufacturing Processes and Basic Materials Industry” clearly states that high-speed, precision and heavy-duty bearings and other mechanical basic components with strong driving force and significant radiation effect will be regarded as key industries for development during the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period. The main direction of attack is to improve performance, reliability and service life, and strive to make them reach or approach the international advanced level. It was also pointed out that with policy support, by 2015, the sales of the bearing industry will reach 222 billion yuan, and the average annual growth rate of the industry will be between 12% and 15%, among which the growth rate of high-end bearings such as high-speed, precision and heavy-duty ones will be even faster. To achieve such a growth rate, the bearing industry must undergo transformation and upgrading, and improve in aspects such as technology, product quality and brand image.

Industry organizations and other institutions should guide and assist enterprises in improving their quality management systems and metrological testing systems in accordance with high standards and strict requirements, and form a long-term mechanism for quality assurance.
